لقد دأب المصريون منذ قديم الأزل على ختان بناتهم على أساس أنها عادة تم توريثها من جيل إلى جيل، وساعد على ذلك قلة الوعي الصحي فى هذه الحقبة الزمنية، هذه العادة إلصقت على سبيل الخطأ إلى تاريخ مصر الفرعوني بالرغم من أن هذه العادة لم تكن معلومة لدى الفراعنة المصرين، وجميع البرديات الطبية التى تعرضت لكل ما يخص المرآة من أمراض وأعراض وعلاجات لم يوجد بها إشارة واحدة إلى ختان الإناث، ولكنها وفى التسعينات أصبحت ظاهرة الختان حديث الساعة بإعتبارها إنتهاكاً لحقوق المرأة، وكان هذا الموضوع هو محور حديث كل المؤتمرات على الصعيد الداخلى والدولي والتى تهتم بصحة المرأة والسكان.
