وردت عبارة أهل البيت في موارد كثيرة جداً، في كلمات الرسول تعبيراً عن جماعة خاصة ينسبون إليه (صلى الله عليه وسلم). وقد ذكرت لهم أوصاف، وجعلت لهم منزلة، ولزمت الأمة تجاههم حقوق ومسؤوليات كثيرة ومتنوعة، كما أنها هامة وخطيرة. وقد ورد الحديث عن هذه الجماعة بالذات في القرآن الكريم أيضاً، في أكثر من مورد، وأكثر من تعبير، وكان التعبير عنهم بـ"أهل البيت" واحداً منها أيضاً. وحيث إن البعض قد ذهب عن عمد أو غير عمد إلى التشكيك بالمقصود بهذه الكلمة، فقد رأى "جعفر مرتضى العاملي" أن يبادر إلى البحث في هذا الأمر بالذات في محاولة منه لكشف الحقائق التي شوهتها يد التحريف، وذلك من خلال دراسته "لآية لتطهير" الموجودة في سورة الأحزاب، والتي صرحت بأن الله سبحانه قد أذهب الرجس عن "أهل البيت" وطهرهم تطهراً...
