ترتكز الرؤية الشعرية عند عبد الله عبيد في "كحياة عارية تحت المطر" على الحوار الداخلي، ويبدو ذلك عبر إختيار الشاعر لموضوعات خاصة جداً وذاتية جداً مكنت من إستدعاء مثل هكذا بناء شعري ذي طابع سردي، وهذه الذاتوية العالية هي التي صيغت ثيمات الديوان لا سيما تلك المتعلقة بالعلاقة مع المرأة والوطن وأشياء الشاعر، وكل ذلك يأتي ضمن أبعاد التجربة الواقعية بشكل بدا ديوانه أقرب إلى أن تكون قصائده سيرة نفسية للشاعر وهو يقف تحت ضغط الزمن وسلطانه، والحب وأوجاعه.
في القصيدة المعنونة (13 قصيدة في الحب) نقرأ: "لم أزل عاشقاً... حاضناً قوسَ أيامه... أيُّ سهْمٍ لقنص الحبيبةِ... في قلبها... أطلقُ؟... نهرٌ من حليب السماء... أغمس فيهِ الزمان وأتركْ... زهرتها في العراء يهز هزها... عدمٌ مطلقُ... الخيولُ التي خرجتْ عنْ... سياج أنوثتها ركضتْ في... الفراغ الكبير... وخلّتْ... وراءً لطيف النهاية يصهل... كان يمكن أن تستعيد سحاب... السذاجة قبل إنسحاب عواصفها... في المساء الأخير... وتمنح ليلتنا... نجمة من أعالي الحياة... وترحلْ".
وبهذا المعنى، يظهر بوضوح إرتباط الصوت بالنوستالجيا لدى الشاعر عبيد، وقد انطلق من الذات ليطوف في آفاق دلالية أرحب، فتثري تجربته الشعرية المتفاعل معها، والمشارك للمتلقي عيشها أيضاً.
يضم الكتاب قصائد نثرية انطوت تحت عنوانين رئيسين هما: 1-لئلا يُجرحَ قلب الوردة، 2-أجراس لجسد العزلة.
