هذا الكتاب دراسة الشاعر الجاهلى عبيد بن الأبرص والعصر الجاهلى له أهميته فى سيرة الشعر العربي كله فقد اشتقرت فى هذا العصر تقاليد القصيدة. وتحددت مفرادت المعجم الشعرى وعبيد بن الأبرص له أهمية بالغة فى هذا العصر. فشعره يمثل مرحلة انتقال بين الشعر البادئ الذى لم تستقر تقاليد الفنية والشعر الناضج المكتمل الذى اتضحت أصوله الفنية كلها والكتاب دراسة للمستوى الصوتى فى شعر الشاعر ، تشتمل : التقابل الصوتى . والحركات الطويلة ، والتكرار الصوتى ، والدلالة الذاتية والماحكاة ، والجناس ، تقسيم البيت وغيرها من ظواهر المستوى الصوتى. كما يدرس الكتاب الصورة الجزئية من تشيبه واشتعارة وكناية والصور الكلية واللوحات الممتدة فيما يتعلق بالمرأة والقبيلة والحرب والحيوان. والدراسة تأخذ بأدوات المنهج الأسلوبى التى تفيد من منجرزات القدماء في البلاغة من ناحية وما توصل غليه الدرس اللغوية الحديث من ناحية أخرى.
