ولا بد للمرء أن يعجب عند دراسته حياة هؤلاء العلماء المكتشفين كيف بتفانون في سبيل دوافعهم الداخلية التي لا تخمد وحاجتهم لسبر الطبيعة وإكتشاف ما يتحكم بها.
ولكن أن يكون المرء رائداً في العلم يتطلب جرأة لا حد لها تجعله يصر على وجهة نظره حتى لو لم تكن على وفاق مع وجهات النظر السائدة في زمانها، والخوض في قصة الفيزياء هو الخوض في قصة شجاعةٍ كانت طبيعة بارزة لدى كل شخصيات هذه القصة...
وبناء عليه، جرى تقسيم الكتاب إلى عشرين فصلاً حملت العناوين التالية: الفصل الأول: "الفيزياء اليونانية"، الفصل الثاني: "الفلك اليوناني"، الفصل الثالث: "العلم فيما قبل غاليليه"، الفصل الرابع: "فيزياء غاليليه"، الفصل الخامس: "نيوتن وفيزياؤه، طبيعة النظرية"، الفصل السادس: "قانون نيوتن في الثقالة ومعاصروه"، الفصل السابع: "عصر ما بعد نيوتن، مبادئ الإنحفاظ الديناميكية"، الفصل الثامن: "عصر ما بعد نيوتن، مبادئ الأصغريات وميكانيك لاغرانج وهاملتون"، الفصل التاسع: "نشوء البصريات والكهرباء المغنطيسية"، الفصل العاشر: "عصر فرادي - مكسويل"، الفصل الحادي عشر: "أوسع قوانين الفيزياء - الترموديناميك والنظرية الحركية والميكانيك الإحصائي"، الفصل الثاني عشر: "أصل نظرية الكم"، الفصل الثالث عشر: "صيغة بلانك في إشعاع الجسم الأسود وفوتون أينشتاين"، الفصل الرابع عشر: "الفيزياء التجريبية في نهاية القرن التاسع عشر".
