قليلة تلك الكتب التي يشعر المرء عند مطالعتها في لغاتها الأجنبية أنه من الضروري الإسراع بنقلها إلى اللغة العربية، وينتمي هذا الكتاب إلى هذه النوعية من الكتب، فيتناول هذا العمل والذي أشرف على إعداده البروفيسور يعقوب لاندوا، تاريخ الطائفة اليهودية في مصر منذ منتصف القرن الخامس عشر وحتى الربع الأول من القرن العشرين. وقد شارك في إعداد هذا العمل أربعة عشر باحثاً كل منهم على دراسة جزئية معينة من تاريخ الطائفة. ولاتكمن قيمة هذا الكتاب في طرافة الموضوع الذي يتناوله أوفي إثارته لغريزة القارئ في معرفة تاريخ إحدى الطوائف التي أقامت في مصر منذ وقت مبكر وحتى منتصف القرن العشرين بقدر ما تكمن في طبيعة المنهج الذي اتبعه من دوّنوا هذا العمل. وعند مطالعة هذا العمل فسوف يلاحظ المتخصص، وغير المتخصص، في التاريخ اليهودي أن هذا العمل لا يأخذ بوجهة النظر التقليدية التي ترى أن التاريخ لا يعدو كونه سجلاً للأحداث أومجرد سرد للأحداث ذاتها وإنما يأخذ بوجهة النظر الإجتماعية في التاريخ التي ترى أن التاريخ يدرس كل ما يفعله الإنسان، أو فكر فيه، أو أحس به. وفي إطار هذه الرؤية أو الوجهة فإن التاريخ يعد سجلاً لكل ما حدث في نطاق الإدراك البشري.
