من عادة السفراء والقناصل والمحلقين بالبعثات الدبلوماسية بعد مكوثهم سنوات عديدة في بلد من البلدان أنهم يكتسبون خبرة عن ذلك البلد، لا بل يتعاطفون معه أحياناً، فيطيب لهم بعد إنفكاكهم من عملهم أن يكتبوا ذكرياتهم وإنطباعاتهم عن ذلك البلد؛ وكثيراً ما تطلب الجهات الرسمية أو دور النشر منهم إعداد مثل هذه المذكرات لإطلاع القراء والباحثين عن أحوال ذلك البلد.
كانت هذه العادة جارية في القرون الماضية، ولا زالت مستمرة إلى اليوم؛ وقد عمل بها في العقود الأخيرة بعض العراقيين الذين كانوا في خدمة السلك الدبلوماسي.
وهذا الكتاب الذي يقدمه الكاتب اليوم للقراء هو واحد من أعمال القنصل الفرنسي "روسو" الذي خدم في إيران والعراق مدة غير قصيرة. وهو ينتمي إلى أسرة عمل عدد غير قليل من أفرادها في خدمة الدولة من خلال السلك الدبلوماسي في الشرق أكان في إيران أم في العراق أم في حلب (سوريا).
هذه الرحلة هي مذكرات طريق، أي ملاحظات سريعة سجلها المؤلف خلال أيام السفر فيها يستشهد بأقوال المؤلفين الأقدمين مثل هيرودوتس وزنيفون وكوينتوس كراسس وغيرهم. ونص رحلته هذا ليس علميّاً أو تاريخيّاً بالمعنى الدقيق، بل هو مذكرات سريعة تستشف في بعض صفحاتها نفس الإستخباراتية، فهو يعد مخططاً لمرور الجيش الفرنسي إلى الهند عبر تركيا وإيران لينافس التغلغل البريطاني في الشرق، وهو يقدم بعض تقاريره لجهات عسكرية قبل إرسالها إلى الجهة المدنية المختصة أي وزارة الشؤون الخارجية.
اهتم المؤلف بالقبائل العربية فذكر أسماء أكثر من مائتي قبيلة وقبيلة، وركز على قبيلتي عنزة وعقيل؛ واهتم روسو أيضاً بالخيول العربية إذ كان معجباً بها فذكر أسماء أشهر السلالات وأنسابها وأعطى وصفاً مختصراً وجميلاً لها.
وترك المؤلف تقريره هذه أسماء جداول وقنوات عديدة مرّ بها، ووصف البادية الغربية أي بادية الشام وسكانها وعاداتهم وما إلى ذلك.
