هذا الكتاب كما أراد له مؤلفه أ.د. ناتول، هو محاولة لإظهار الإمكانية التي يشتغل الأدب فيها على الواقع، ولكونه "محاكاة جديدة لعمل شكسبير وتمثله للواقع" ففيه اهتمام بالناحية النظرية والناحية النقاشية معاً. لقد اراد (ناتول) تصويب النظر إلى الواقع من خلال الأدب، ولهذا نجده يقول: بأن الأدب بإمكانه أن يصور الواقع نفسه إلا أن الحديث في هذا الرأي أبان ثمانينات القرن العشرين كان يعني الإنكباب على كشف صراع داخلي معقد، والمحصلة الأسلوبية لهذا، قد يكون تناوباً لمعرفة وقفية، يرافقها تأكيد عدائي بالكامل، قد يعد نافياً لي أنا، المؤلف، بطريقة ما ...".
يتألف الكتاب من أربعة فصول بحثت في الموضوعات الآتية: الفصل الأول: زعزعة المفاهيم السياقات ويضم أ- علاقات لا أشياء: الحقيقة المختلفة، ب – إذابة الإنسان: أسبقية اللغة على المعنى، الفصل الثاني: انحلال المحاكات قناع الواقعية: الإحتمال عند الكلاسيكيين الجدد (الواقعية الوصفية والواقعية الضرفية ... تصورات القرن الثامن عشر عن شكسبير)، الفصل الثالث: الطريقة التي حاكى بها شكسبير العالم "يوليوس قيصر" و "كوريولانوس" ، "تاجر البندقية" و "عطيل" ، "هنري الرابع" ، : تأمير هال وفالستاف، الفصل الرابع: المحاكاة الجديدة مثل شكسبير "لحية أوكهام: ملاحظة على ما هو كامن.
