إذا لم أعد إلى البيت هذا المساء، في موعدي بين العشاءين، لا تظني، أيتها السيدة التي أثقلها الحزن، أنني أعتكفت. تعرفين أنني لا أغالب هذا الدين حتى لا يغلبني، وتعرفين أنهم، منذ بعض زمان، يقفلون أبواب المساجد بالأقفال الحديدية الثقيلة، ولم تعد، كما نذكر، ملجأ الغريب وعابري السبيل من ضيوف الله. ابحثي عني في مكان آخر! إذا لم أعد إلى البيت، وقد جاء المساء ينهي دورة أخرى من دورات الشمس، واشتعلت شموع الأكواخ وثريات القصور، لا تظني أن ساحرة البحر «عايشة قنديشة» قد أغوتني في مفترق طريق، وأخذتني إلى مملكتها العجائبية، فأنت تعرفين أنني أخاف الكلاب وأطياف جنيات الليل. ابحثي عني في مكان آخر! وإذا جاء هذا المساء، وأنا بعد لم أطرق باب البيت، لا تظني أنني تهت عن الطريق، فأنا أعرفه مغمض العينين، يقودني إليه التعب والفرح و الشوق. ابحثي عني في مكان آخر!
