"فلم يكن من ملاذ سوى ما تبسطه أمامك كازابلانكا من أمكنة، هربت إليها ضاجّاً من نفسك، قبل أيّ شيء آخر، لم تكن الألسنة حول أمّك هي التي تُطاردك هذه المرّة، بل شيءٌ آخر غامض، لا هيئةَ له، ولا ظلَّ، تستشعر وجوده، تلمسه في خفقة قلبك، وفي تردّد خطواتك، لكن لا تعرف ما هو، كنت تشعر - وأنت تذرع الشوارع، والساحات، والحدائق - أن المكان ليس هو المكان، كان يُنكرك، كان يتسلّل إلى عينيك مائعاً، من غير أبعاد، أو صلابة، لا نستطيع القول إنّك كنت لا تحسّ بالإنتماء إليه، وإنّما بالتوه، عدم الإنتماء قريب من الغربة ينزع منك ألفة الأشياء، أمّا التوه فله خصلة أن يمنحك الشعور بالضياع في عالم تعرفه حقّ المعرفة...".
تُصوِّر هذه الرواية الإنفصام التاريخي الذي يشوب الذات الإنسانية؛ وذلك بسرد حياتها الخاصة من خلال حكايات الآخرين.
