ميشيل عفلق؛ سياسي خسره الأدب، وأديب انتحر في السياسة، وخير من عبر عن المأساة هو نفسه فكتب يوماً: "كلما فكرت أني سأكرس نفسي للكتابة أخجل في داخلي وأحتقر نفسي نوعاً ما، لأن الكتابة ليست غايتي العميقة، بل أنظر إليها دائماً كأنها شاهد على عجزي عن العمل".
التردد والقلق، التمرد والبطولة، الانتماء والقدرية، وكل الهواجس والانفعالات البشرية طبعت بدايات عفلق الشاب ببصماتها، فأتعبته وأرعبته في آن، فصرخ بخاطرة من خواطره: "يا لذة الرأس الفارغ..." وتمرد على قلقه وتردده فقرر واختار طريق النضال السياسي، متخلياً عن الأدب ورومانسيته فكتب: "لقد درست على الماضي وبترته من كياني...".
ثم نحر أديباً في أعماقه على مدى ما يقارب القرن ليكون السياسي البطل. وهذا الكتاب، يجعل من عفلق الأديب، نداً لعفلق السياسي، ويؤكد أن له شأناً في الأدب، لا يقل جدارة عن شأنه بالنضال والفكر والعقيدة.
