لم يعرف الإنسان قبل العصر الحديث أخلاقا للحرب، إلا ما عرفه مع الإسلام، وحين عرفها المعاصرون اكتفوا بتقريرها وتسجيلها في الكتب والمواثيق الدولية فقط، أما الواقع فيا لبؤس البشرية فيه مع الحروب التي تندلع هنا وهناك من وقت إلى آخر، وتخوضها دول متقدمة أحيانًا ودول متخلفة أحيانًا، دون أن نلحظ بينها فرقًا في موقفها من أخلاق المحارب، وتبدو مشكلة الحرب في الإسلام كبيرة وشاغلة للناس في هذا الزمان، لتعلق الموضوع بالعلاقات الدولية بين الأمم والدول، وما ينتج عنه من أفكار وأحكام يؤثر بقوة في كثير من قضايا العالم الإسلامي الحساسة وعلاقته بالشرق والغرب.
إن القتال والحرب قدر مكتوب على البشرية بأجيالها المتتابعة، وهي جزء أصيل من حياة كثير من الأعلام في الشرق والغرب قديمًا وحديثًا، لأجل هذا لا تسل: لم حارب النبي "صلى الله عليه وسلم" فكتب الكتائب، وغزا الأقوامن وأرسل السرايا والزحوف؟ ولكن سل؟ كيف حارب؟ وأي مبادئ التزم؟ سل عن العهود وحفظها، والموائيق وصيانتها، سل: ما الذي دفعه إلى الحرب قبلها؟ وما الذي ألزم نفسه بحفظها من المبادئ والأخلاق أثناءها؟ وكيف نظر إلى عدوه حال انتصاره وحال هزيمته بعدها؟.
