مظفر التواب شاعر كبير في النصف الثاني من القرن العشرين ظاهرة لافتة تكاد تكون فريدة. وقد كان له، منذ أواسط السبعينات، حضوره البارز في الأرض المحتلة، فقد طبعت قصائده في كتب أشبه بكتب الجيب، ووزعت أشرطته بشكل لافت للنظر، وكتبت عنه العديد من الدراسات والمقالات، وحظي بما حظي به محمود درويش أبرز شاعر فلسطيني، وإن لم يحظ بما حظي به درويش من دراسات ونشر أعمال في العالم العربي.
من هذا المنطلق تأتي الدراسة في هذا الكتاب، كما يقول الباحث، هي ثمرة قراءات متكررة لأشياء مظفر النواب بدأها عام 1978 حيث أنجز حينها مقالتين عن الشاعر أتبعها بقراءة ودراسة عن طبقات أمنيات على بوابة السنة الجدية، متوجاً هذه القراءات والكتابات بدراسة عن طبقات أعماله في الأرض المحتلة، وطبقة أعماله الصادرة في لندن، دراسة تناول فيها الدراسات التي كتبت عنه، وقصيدة "بحار البحارين" حيث تناول الباحث فيها الثنائيات والرموز التراثية وصلة القصيدة بتصرف العصر، أما في الخاتمة فقد آثر إبداء راية في ثبوت هذا الشاعر، حتى الآن على مبادئه، وعلى إصدار الشاعر على أن تبقى قصائده كما هي، إلآ ما طبعه له غيره، فلم يحذف عبارات مهمة من باب مهادنة هذا النظام العربي أو ذاك ولم يدخل إلى عقله حساب الربح والخسارة، وهذا موضع احترام هذا الشاعر بالإضافة إلى ذلك أثر الباحث في الخاتمة الإشارة، وبإيجاز إلى تأثيره على حركة الشعر في فلسطين.
