لتحقيق العدالة فإن القضاء يستعين بخبرة بعض الخبراء فى المجالات الفنيةالمحختلفة, وأحد تلك المجالات الفنية الهامة هو مجال الطب الشرعى أو ما يسمى فى بعض الأحيان بالطب العدلى. والطب الشرعى ليس فرع منفصل من أفرع الطب بل هو تطبيق لأى فرع من أفرع الطب لتوضيح أو حل أى مشكلة قانونية, وبمعنى آخر فإن الطب الشرعى يعرف بأنه حلقة الوصل بين الطب والقانون.
وقد مورس الطب الشرعى منذ أقدم العصور, ويرجح أ، يكون أول من عرف ممارسة الطب الشرعى هو إمحوتب المهندس الشهير الذى صمم هرم الملك زوسر المدرج بسقارة (الأسرة الثالثة), والطبيب البارع الذى رفعه قدماء المصريين واعتبروه إله الطب المصرى, والقاضى العادل الذى مزج بين معلوماته الطبية والقانون. وبالرغم من أن الطبيب الشرعى هو المسؤول عن كتابة التقارير الطبية الشرعية, إلا أن معرفة العاملين فى مجالات القضاء والقانون بأساسيات على الطب الشرعى ضرورية, وخاصة الهيئات القضائية والمحامين حيث أن معرفة تلك الأساسيات تساعد عبى الإلمام بالقضية من كافة الأوجه. ولذلك فقد روعى فى هذا الكتاب توضيح أساسيات الطب الشرعى مع التركيز على كل مل يهم الهيئات القضائئية من نقاط مع البعد بقدر الإمكان عن الخوض فى تفصيلات ومصطلحات طبية لا تهم غير الطبيب الشرعى.
