البحث في قضية تمس العالم العربي يبدو مسألة لغاية الصعوبة والتعقيد، ويبدو الباحث كمن يسير في حقل ألغام، فالباحث هنا لا يُقيّم عمله بالإستناد إلى الواقع، أو بالنظر إلى إلتزامه بالمنهج العلمي، وإنما يسهل وضعه في إطار إيديولوجي والحكم عليه من خلال هذا الإطار، فمنذ بدايات العقد الأخير من القرن العشرين بدأ العالم العربي يتعرض لهجوم العولمة وتأثيراتها، خصوصاً بعد الثورة الهائلة في مجال الإتصالات والإنفتاح غير المسبوق على العالم، مما أدى إلى ردة فعل طبيعية، وهي الإرتداد إلى الذات والبحث المضني عنها، لكي يطرح السؤال الدائم: من نحن؟ وحتى تتم الإجابة عن هذا السؤال، يبقى العقل العربي منغلقاً على ذاته في تشكيلات بدائية هي المعيار للحكم على كل شيء محيط به.
لم يكن إفتتاح قناة الجزيرة في العام 1966 ليشكل حدثاً مهماً بحد ذاته، فهي ليست المرة الأولى التي تفتتح فيه قناة تلفزيونية، ولم تكن الأخيرة، إلا أن التأثير الذي مارسته هذه القناة على الوعي العربي هو الذي يستحق النظر إليه بإمعان.
فنجاح هذه القناة في تشكيل رأي عام عربي في مرحلة تاريخية غاية في الصعوبة، بدا فيها العالم العربي كالسفينة التي تبحر في بحر متلاطم الأمواج ولا يبصر شاطئ الأمان؛ هو الذي يدفع الباحث إلى دراسة هذه الظاهرة بإمعان.
إن العالم العربي اليوم تتباهه الكثير من الثنائيات: القومية والدين، السنة والشيعة، الليبرالية والشيوعية، القطرية والأممية، الإعتدال والتشدد... إلخ، فأمام هذا الواقع المعقد والمشتت كيف تستطيع قناة تلفزيونية أن تمتلك أي تأثير؟؟.
