رغم حداثة علم الإجتماع بالقياس للعلوم الأخرى والفترة الزمنية التي مرت على ظهوره كنسق علمي. إلا أنه قد صار من الموضوعات الشائعة للدراسة. فقد اهتم الناس دائماً بكل شيء يدور حولهم ما عدا تلك المجتمعات التي يعيشون فيها، ولقد لمع بريق بعض الدراسات للعديد من الفلاسفة وخاصة تلك التي دارت حول المجتمع المثالي أو نموذج المجتمع. ومع ذلك فإنه وحتى منتصف القرن التاسع عشر لم يعني ببحث طبيعة المجتمع الفعلي بطريقة موضوعية إلا القليل من الناس.
وفي السنوات الحديثة حدث تقدم فجائي في الاهتمام بعلم الاجتماع والدراسات الاجتماعية ومن ثم حظيت موضوعاته بالقبول وأصبح لها مكاناً في العديد من المدارس والكليات بعد أن كان الاهتمام محصوراً في القليل من أقسام الجامعات، ونظراً لأن علم الاجتماع ما يزال بعد من الموضوعات الحديثة التي أدرجت ضمن المقررات الدراسية، في الجامعات، فما تزال حاجة طلاب هذا التخصص ملحة لتوفير الكتب المرجعية التي تغطي مجال علم الاجتماع والدراسات الاجتماعية، وما نأمله أن يكون العمل الحالي مفيداً بالنسبة لهؤلاء الذين يدرسون هذا التخصص بموضوعاته المختلفة.
