وقد مر المسجد النبوي عبر تاريخه الطويل بالعديد من الزيارات والإضافات والإصلاحات، إذ إن مكانة هذا المسجد في قلوب الناس جعلت جميع الحكام والسلاطين يهرعون إلى إجراء مزيد من الإصلاحات والترميمات بهذا المسجد، والتي تعكس إلى حد كبير مكانة هذا المسجد في قلوب الناس جميعاً. وهذا الكتاب الذي بين أيدينا يصف التاريخ المعماري لهذا المسجد ويعرض في القسم الأول عمارة المسجد النبوي عبر العصور؛ بدءاً من تأسيس المسجد النبوي في عهد الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم، ومروراً بعصر الخلفاء الراشدين. ثم الدولة الأموية والدولة العباسية والدولة المملوكية والدولة العثمانية، حيث يتتبع في هذا القسم مراحل زيادة وتوسع المسجد النبوي، أما القسم الثاني فخصص للحديث عن رسوم المسجد النبوي في المخطوطات الإسلامية وعلى البلاطات الخزفية والجص والخشب.
