يتناول هذا الجزء، السادس والأخير، من "مفرّج الكروب" الحوادث من سنة 646 إلى سنة 661هـ. أي نحو خمسة عشر عاماً. كان المؤلّف "ابن واصل" يعيش في خضم أحداثها، لصيقاً بالكثير من وقائعها، مشاهداً ومشاركاً، أو قريباً من صانعي القرار، يُخبرونه، ويحدّثونه، ويطلعونه على المعلومات والنصوص والوثائق، وهو قد بلغ سن النضوج بعد أن تجاوز الأربعين عاماً من عمره. وبمطالعة هذا الجزء يكتمل لدى القارئ "شريط السيرة الذاية" لابن واصل التي يوجد إشارات كثيرة عنها في طيّ صفحات الكتاب.
وما من شك في أن استعراض حياة "ابن واصل" ومفاصلها الأساسية، من خلال ما دوّنه بنفسه عن نفسه، يوفّر لنا الكثير من المعطيات عن شخصيته، واهتماماته، وموقعه، ونسيج علاقاته برجالات عصره من ملوك، وأمراء، وقادة، وقضاة، وعلماء، وأدباء، فضلاً عن رحلاته وتنقّلاته في بلاد الشام، والعراق، ومصر، وبلاد الروم، وبلاد الفرنج، وسفارته إلى صقلية، وجنوب إيطاليا، والمناصب التي تقلّب فيها، ومصنفات المتنوعة في التاريخ، والأدب، والمنطق، والهيئة، والهندسة، والفقه، وأصول الدين،... وهذا كله يقدّم لنا صورة واضحة عن مؤلّفٍ عملاق، واسع الاطلاع، مشارك في العلوم المختلفة، له مكانته وموقعه في مجتمعه وبين أقرانه. ومن هنا كان هذا الكتاب في مقدّمة منجزاته، وفي طليعة المصادر الأساسية عن تاريخ ملوك بني أيوب، وعصرهم الحافل بالصراع بين المسلمين والفرنج، والمسلمين والمغول، والصراع بين الأيوبيّين أنفسهم.
