لقد اهتم مؤلفو السيرة النبوية بخصائص الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم، وأولوها عنايتهم، وافتنّوا فيها بأنواع من التأليف، وأفردوها بأبواب من التصنيف، وجعلوا منها كتباً وأسفاراً، وحفظوها أحاديث وأخباراً، وكاد ألا يخلو منها كتاب من السِّيَر، إذ درجوا على أن يختموها بذكر شمائله وفضائله صلى الله عليه وسلم.
وهذا كتاب في خصائص الحبيب المصطفى صلى الله عليه وسلم، للإمام الشيخ ابن طولون الصالحي، سمّاه "مرشد المحتار إلى خصائص المختار" لخّص فيه كتاب "أنموذج اللبيب في خصائص الحبيب" للعلاّمة الجلال السيوطي، وكتاب "اللفظ المكرّم بخصائص النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم" لقاضي القضاة القطب الخيضري، وكتاب "الإعلام بخصائص النبي عليه السلام" للجلال البلقيني، وكتاب "غاية السول في خصائص الرسول" لابن الملقن، وهو أول من أفردها بالتصنيف، ورتّبه على مقدمة وثمانية فصول.
