في إحدى مقابلاته، وفي سياق السؤال عن الهدف الذي يضعه نصب عينيه إذ يجلس للكتابة يقول؛ "إنني أفكر دائماً في بلدي، وأحاول أن أجعل كتابتي طوبوغرافيا إجتماعية للشعب التركي".
من قبل أطلق بلزاك على نفسه لقب "سكرتير المجتمع الفرنسي" فكان سكرتيراً أميناً لهذا المجتمع، فقدّمه، مثله، وتمثّله، كما لم يتمكن الإقتصادي، والسوسيولوجي، والسياسي، حسب إنطباعات إنجلز، فقدم بلزاك سفراً مطرزاً بآلام المخاض لمجتمع فرنسي في طور تخلقه الجديد كمجتمع حديث، وأطلق على هذا السفر "الكوميديا الإنسانية".
رغم التهجم، المبضع الذي يغوص في الجرح، والعيون الصقرية التي تنفذ عميقاً تحت السطح، لبلوغ مخابئ شيطانية الواقع وخبثه الذي ينتج كل هذه البشاعة، رغم كل هذه الفضاءات المأساوية، فإن بلزاك يرسمها بوصفها "ملهاة".
فحسم بذلك الجدل والسجال، حول حدود الملهاة والمأساة، منذ مأدبة أفلاطون، ومحاجة سقراط "بأن الفنان الحق في المأساة، فنان في الملهاة أيضاً".
ليخلص أبرز نقاد العصر الحديث نورثروب فراي "إلى أن الخط الفاصل بين الملهاة والمأساة نحيل إلى حد أن المأساة ملهاة ضمنية أو غير تامة"، وأن المأساة "حادثة في النهج العريض للفناء والبعث منحها دانتي اسم الكوميديا".
