فى خلال القرنين السابع عشر والثامن عشر كان الزنوج موزعين على طول السهل الساحلى الذى يشرف على المحيط الأطلسى، إلا أنهم ومع مرور الوقت يتجمعون فى الولايات الجنوبية.
وفى أوائل القرن التاسع عشر بدأت المقاطعات الشمالية فى تحرير عبيدها، بعد أن إتخذت خطوات أساسية تضمن له القضاء على هذا النظام الفاسد الذى يجعل جماعة من الناس سادة وأخرى من العبيد.
ولعل قصة الزنوج فى أمريكا قصة سيذكرها التاريخ مقرونة بصيف عام 1963م. حين بدأت ثورة 19. ولكن كيف نبتت تلك الثورة ومن أين بدأت؟ نبعت من نهر بعيد يجرى فى عالم غريب عن معظم الأمريكيين، لا يعرفون عنه أكثر مما يعرف سكان الأرض عن الجانب المظلم من القمر.
