يشرح هذا الكتاب والمعنون بـ "النزاع والتخاصم فيما بين بني أمية وبني هاشم" والذي هو من تأليف "تقي الدين المقريزي" حقيقة النزاع بين بني هاشم وبني أمية، والذي أمتد جذوره إلى هاشم بن عبد مناف وابن أخيه أمية بن عبد شمس، فيستعرض المقريزي جملة من الأسباب التى أحكمت المنافرة بين هاشم وأمية، وانتقلت بعدهما إلى ولديهما عبد المطلب بن هاشم وحرب بن أمية وتمادت العداوة بين البيتين حتى انتقلت من رجل إلى رجل، وانتهت إلى رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، وكان موقف أبي سفيان معلوماً لكل من اطلع على خطوط السيرة النبوية، وتاريخ تلك الحقبة من السنين.
ثم انتقل هذا الموقف إلى الإمام علي رضي الله عنه، ومعاوية بن أبي سفيان، وبعده إلى الحسين بن علي ويزيد بن معاوية، وكهذا تسلسل من بيت إلى بيت، ومن رجل إلى رجل، ولقد أحكم النزاع وتوثقت أسبابه على مر الأيام.
وحاول المقريزي أن يستعرض علاقة هذين البيتين ويسجل الأسباب التي دعت إلى المنافرة وفعلاً نجحت محاولته، وكان كتابه الأول في موضوعه، إذ لم يسبقه أحد في هذا البحث، سوى ما سجلته المصادر التاريخية الكبرى من ثناياها عن سيرة بني هاشم، وبني أمية ولكن دون أن تخصهما بكتاب مستقل.
وجاء الكتاب سجلاً مسلسلاً عن مشاكل والخصام القائمة بين هاتين الأسرتين والصراع الدامي الذي دار بينهما زماناً ليس بالقصير، وانتهى إلى مآسى فظيعة أسود فيها وجه التاريخ، هذا ولم يقتصر المؤلف على موقف الأمويين من الهاشميين فحسب، بل تناول موقف العباسيين من العلويين، وسرد الكثير من الوقائع التي جرت عليهم، من قبل الخلفاء العباسيين وأعوانهم.
