تعتبر هذه الدراسة من أحسن الدراسات التي تناولت بالبحث طريق الحج الشامي فترة الحكم العثماني، وقد كان لهذه الطريق أهمية دينية وإقتصادية لذا أولته الدولة عناية كبيرة، فهو بالنسبة لها يمثل رمزاً دينياً عظيماً فهو يرتبط بهيبة الدولة وسمعة السلطان حامي حمى الحرمين الشريفين وهو مسؤول بالدرجة الأولى عن حماية الحجاج خاصة وإن قافلة الحج الشامي كانت أجناس شتى من المسلمين العرب والترك والكرد والعجم حيث كانوا يجتمعون في دمشق ومنها ينطلقون متوجهون إلى الديار الحجازية في مراسم خاصة يشارك فيها الوالي وكبار الموظفين والأعيان بين تهليل الأهالي، وكان يرافق مدة القافلة في الذهاب والإياب نشاط تجاري واسع وبخاصة في مركز الولاية، وكان لهذا النشاط آثاره الإقتصادية والإجتماعية على أهالي دمشق، كما إن المنازل على طول طريق الحج كانت تتحول إلى ما يشبه السوق الموسمي حيث تبادل السلع، وقد استفاد أهالي شرقي الأردن من مرور القافلة عبر هذا الطريق، فكانوا ينشطون إقتصادياً خلال هذه الفترة ببيع جزء من إنتاجهم إلى القافلة.
لذا كان على الدولة أن توفر الامن وكافة وسائل الراحة للحجاج فعينت في بداية عهدها أمراء القافلة من بين الزعماء المحليين ممن يحظون بإحترام العربان، وبعد ذلك ربطت هذا المنصب بمنصب وإلى دمشق إضافة إلى مرافقة قوة عسكرية للقافلة لتوفر الحماية لها، وقامت بترميم القلاع والبرك على طول الطريق.
وجرت العادة أن يخرج أمير القافلة قبيل خروجها من دمشق لتوزيع الصرة على شيوخ العريان المسؤولة عن حماية القافلة وكان من الطبيعي إذا اختلت العلاقة بين الطرفين أن تتعرض القافلة للهجوم، وفي النصف الثاني من القرن التاسع عشر أقامت الدولة عدداً من المحاجر الصحية لوقاية الحجاج من الأوبيئة التي قد تنتقل إليهم أثناء الحج وذلك قبل دخولهم إلى دمشق كوسيلة لمنع إنتشار الوباء وبخاصة الكوليرا.
