"قل للمليحة في الخمار الأسود... ماذا فعلت بناسك متعبد، قد كان شمّر للصلاة ثيابه حتى قعدت له بباب المسجد، ردّي عليه صلاته وصيامه... لا تفتنيه بحق جاه محمد" أبيات ثلاث سكنت كل العقول، ودارت على كل الألسن، وجابت كل العصور، ناظمها هو مسكين الدارمي صاحب هذا الديوان، وقد كان لنظم تلك الأبيات قضية شاعت عبر الزمان وعرفها الجميع، كان مسكين شاعراً مجيداً، فعلاً، وكان مقدماً في قومه شرفاً وشجاعة، امتاز بقوله الرقيق اللفظ، الحسن المعنى، الواضح الغاية، تجلت في شعره العبارة الحلوة المتينة، والديباجة المشرقة البعيدة عن حوشي الكلم.
ليس لديوانه أي ذكر في أي مظان من مظان الأدب، كالخزانة، والفهرست، وكشف الظنون، وغيرها وذلك رغم اعتناء أهل اللغة والمفسرين بشعره، وجعله من ضمن شواهدهم النحوية وحججهم في الفصاحة. ولعلّ السبب عائد إلى قلة هذه القصائد.
حمل هذا الكتاب قصائد الدارمي التي تعددت الأغراض فيها فكانت في الحماس والمدح والحكمة، وبشيء مستحسن من الفخر بنفسه، بالإضافة إلى اثنتين من قصائده جاءتا في الهجاء، وبيت واحد في الرثاء.
لم يتعرض مسكين في شعره للمرأة الحبيبة (الزوجة أو الأم)، ولم تطل شباكه الشعرية أغراض النسيب والغزل والشوق، غير أنه طرق باباً نادراً، وهو الغيرة، وقد أجاد فيه. وقد جمعت قصائده وأبياته كلها في هذا الكتاب حيث عملت المحققة على تخريج أبياته لتصل الديوان بجذوره، مرفقة بشروح لتيسير فهم مراميه.
