هذه الدراسة تعيد النظر في الآراء والإتجاهات التى صدرت فى تاريخ واصل الرواية العربية.. فهى تيعد إلى الساحة روايات أنتجتها فترة غير معترف بها سبقت ما يسمى ببداية ( الرواية الفنية) والتى معظم الآراء اتجهت إلى أن هذه البداية كانت رواية ( زينب) لمحمد حسين هيكل والباحث في هذه الدراسة ( محمد سيد عبد التواب) قام بإدخال الفترة من منتصف القرن التاسع عشر وحتى الربع الأول من القرن العشرين في حسبات دراسته .. فنجده يقدم لنا الجديد حيث يتناول أزمة النهضة فى مصر ثم الحملة الفرنسية وما أسماه بوهم الحداثة وجمعورية الرواية آنذاك. يلى هذا نجده يتناول مهمة الرواية وطبيعتها ونشأتها فى النقد العربي الحديث وكذلك الأثر العربي فيها يليله تناول للأثر الغربى فيها من خلال دراستة أثر الترجمة والتعريب. أما الجزء الأخير من الكتاب فقد إتخذ فيه رواية "وى إذن لست بإفرنجى" التى ألفها " خليل أفندى الخورى" نموذجاً لدراسة تحليلية نقدية حيث لم تذمر هذه الرواية فى أى من الدراسات من قبل.
