في كتابه هذا، يفتح الأسير المحرر علي أحمد خشيش ثغرة في جدار المعاناة، ويروي للتاريخ وللوطن حكاية كل معتقل، إنطلاقاً من تجربة خاصة عاشها في معتقل الخيام "وما أدراك ما معتقل الخيام! هو معتقل الجوع والحرمان، معتقل النفوس الأبية، معتقل الأحرار" المقاومين المدافعين عن تراب وطنهم (لبنان) حيث الحياة تتحول إلى نوع من "ممارسة المأساة"، وحيث المرء ملزم بهذه الممارسة ما دام على قيد الحياة.
في هذه التجربة نقرأ كتابة حيَّة لفكرٍ حيّ ينبض بالحياة ويرفض الخضوع للقهر والخنوع، إنها رواية عن (رحلة الإعتقال) أو رواية الصراع بين نداء الواجب وبوح الروح حيث سينتصر الواجب الإنساني دائماً بعيداً عن الأنا، والأنت ولتنطلق (النحن) الجامعة لأبناء الوطن الواحد عند مفترق درب الحق بالحياة الفضلى والكريمة، والتي لا تكون إلا بدحر العدو.
يهدف هذا العمل وفقاً للمؤلف: إلى توضيح أهمية المعاناة، وليساهم في رفع مستوى معرفتنا بالعدو والذين يتعاملون معه، وإن هذه الأهمية الكبيرة التي نتكلم عنها، لنعلم كيفية التعاطي معه لنسود في المجتمع ولنتعاضد ولكي نكون يداً واحدة، فكلما زادت معرفتنا بهذا العدو، تحسّن أداؤنا وتفادينا الرضوخ إليه والتعامل معه".
