وكتب أخبار العلماء والقضاة والقادة ورجال الإدارة. وتطرق إلى الظواهر الاجتماعية في العهدين المملوكي والعثماني، كالأعياد، والمواكب، والمناسبات الهامة، والانتصارات في الحروب، ورصد أخبار قافلة الحج سنوياً، وأعمال السطو، والنهب التي كانت تتعرض لها، وذكر الأوبئة والطواعين، وأحوال المناخ وتبدلاتها، وسلّط الضوء على الحالة الاقتصادية في مصر والشام، أيام المماليك، والعثمانيين، فتناول أوضاع السوق، والأسعار، والتجارة، ونقص أو زيادة المواد الغذائية، وتغير العملة النقدية، وتحدث عن العمارة والعمائر في الدولة وأصحابها.
فكان تاريخ ابن الحمصي (حوادث الزمان ووفيات الشيوخ والأقران)، حافلاً بالأخبار، والأحداث المثيرة، فاستحق أن يكون مؤرخاً عملاقاً في عصره، ويعتبر كتابه من أجود المصادر عن تلك الفترة من تاريخنا.
