دراسةٌ متأنّيةٌ لتاريخ الكتابات أو "الأبجديّات"، منذ ظهورها الأول إلى الإنترنت، وهذا مروراً بالشرقيّن الأوسط والأدنى والعالم الإغريقي وأوروبا.
مقارنةٌ دقيقة بين ثلاث منظومات للكتابة وضعتها المؤلّفةُ في سياقاتها التي رأت فيها النور: طرق كتابة الأعداد على النقود المسكوكة (وبدأ ذلك في إيونيا، حوالي عام 620 قبل الميلاد)، وأخيراً الكتابة المعلوماتية القائمة على الترميز (وقد نشأت في ما بين 1936 و 1942، ثم واصلتها كتابة الشبكات، بدءاً من عام 1969، في الولايات المتحدة).
وإذ تقوم المؤلّفة بتوصيف كلّ طريقة من هذه الطرق تقوم أيضاً بتحليل بناها المتفرّعة وبإظهار تأثير هذه المنظومات في العلاقة بين مستعمليها والعالم.
تستند المؤلفة إلى إختصاصات كثيرة، كالفيلولوجيا أو فقه اللغة والتاريخ والأنثروبولوجيا واللسانيات، لتستكشف تأثيرات هذه "المغامرة السيميائية الفريدة" على الإنسان، ولِترويها بطريقة منذهِلةِ ومُذهِلة.
