تعتبر مشكلات توفير الغذاء هي أخطر ما تواجهه الدول الإسلامية من تحديات اقتصادية، وتحتل باقي التحديات كمشاكل الطاقة والعمالة وغيرها مراتب تالية، وهي ما حدى بنا إلى اختيار المشكلة الغذائية في العالم الإسلامي كأول دراسة علمية وأكاديمية في هذا المجال محاولين قدر استطاعتنا دراسة الأسباب والنتائج وآفاق المستقبل، وعلى ضوء ما توفر لنا من بيانات وإحصاءات وتحليلها أن نضع ما نرى أنه استراتيجية مناسبة للغذاء في دول العالم الإسلامي اعتماداً على الذات لتحقيق الاكتفاء الذاتي في مجموعة الدول الإسلامية واضعين في الاعتبار ما يمكن أن يطرأ على المدى البعيد من متغيرات ذات علاقة بالإنتاج خاصة في القطاع الزراعي.
وقد تبين لنا من المؤلف الذي نسأل الله أن نكون قد وفقنا فيه أن حجم ما تواجهه الدول الإسلامية من مشكلات الغذاء هو في الواقع أقل مما هو قائم، وأن ما يتاح الآن من الموارد الطبيعية لدول العالم الإسلامي يمكن أن يحقق معدلات أفضل للاكتفاء الذاتي كما يتيح إنتاج عدد من السلع عالية القيمة النقدية، كما أن تحسين التجارة الخارجية فيما بين هذه الدول من ناحية وفيما بينها وبين الدول المتقدمة من ناحية أخرى يمكن أن يحقق فرصة أفضل لتوفير الغذاء لهذه الشعوب دون تحمل أعباء اقتصادية جديدة.
ومن هنا فإن علماء الاقتصاد الإسلامي المجددين والمبتكرين مطالبون اليوم أن ينسجوا أفكارهم على نول جديد، حيث أن المشكلة الغذائية في العالم الإسلامي بلغت درجة استأهلت الإمعان بالبحث والتحليل للعلم على تلافي أسباب ذلك التحدي العام الذي أهلك بعض شعوبها.
