يحتوى الكتاب على أربعة فصول، ففى الباب الأول تحدث عن انتهاب مصر من أيام فرض سيطرة على مصر فى أواخر حكم الخديو إسماعيل، ومرور مصر بالأزمة الاقتصادية التى أحاطت بها، ووقعت مصر فى قبضة حملة السندات الإنجليزية والفرنسية حتى يستطيع الفريقان أن يعملا معا فى وادى النيل لنهب الثروات. أما الباب الثانى كان عن عهد احتلال مصر وثورة سبتمبر عام 1881، حيث حدثت الثورة الصغيرة، وكانت ثانى ما توج من أعمال الجيش بالنجاح، وكانت نتيجتها أن إنجلترا لم تستطع أن تأتى عملا حاسما يقضى على آثار الثورة إلا إذا رضيت بالاشتراك مع فرنسا فى احتلال مصر، ولكن إنجلترا كانت تسعى لاستغلال كل فرصة تمكنها من أن تستولى على مصر بمفردها دون شريك لها فى الخيرات التى تتمتع بها أرض الكنانة. وفى البابين الثالث والرابع تكلم المؤلف عن إدارة مصر، حيث لبث الإنجليز فى مصر أكثر من ربع قرن من الزمان استطاعوا خلالها بقدرتهم الاستفادة من نجاحهم فى تنظيم مالية البلاد، وإدارتها فى فترة وجيزة، ويرجع فضل نجاحها إلى اللورد كرومر فى استنقاذها من الورطة التى وقعت فيها إنجلترا، وعادت عليه بشهرة السياسى العظيم، كما تناول الثلاث سنيين كعهد جديد ابتدأنا من عام 1875 وهو ما يسمى "بالمسألة المصرية"، ثم تتبعت الأحداث والتطورات التى أنذرت إنجلترا بزوال ملكها عن أرض مصر.
