اقتضى البحث في تحولات التلقي التاريخي للمقولات الاعتقادية (من العقيدة الى العقائدية) الى النظر في اللحظة التأسيسية لنشأة النمط الجدلي عند اهل الحديث والاخذ بإحدى نماذجه البارزة لتحليلها واستنطاق المنهجيات والأفكار الجدلية الثاوية فيها.
يتابع الباحث رصد حالة من حالات تحولات العقيدة الاولى الى مراحل العقائدية التالية والتي بدورها انتجت أنساقا استدلالية وتأويلية تعتمل في نصوص القرآن سعيا لاكساب المقولات الكلامية مشروعية من النص المؤسس.
يختبر هنا المؤلف نموذج عثمان الدارمي(280ه) والذي مثلت مصنفاته صورة من صور ما اسماه الباحث الكلام الضروري/الاستثنائي الذي مر به التطور العقائدي لدى اهل الحديث والذي تحرك من مرحلة السكوت لدى الرعيل الأول لأهل الحديث في مقابل الكلام الجدلي لدى مخالفيهم الى الكلام الضروري لدى الامام احمد ثم الدارمي ثم الانتقال الى مرحلة الكلام الجدلي لاهل الحديث على يد ابن تيمية في مقابل الكلام الجدلي لمخالفيه.
لقد تركزت جهود المؤلف على ابراز جانب الممارسة الكلامية الجدلية عند اهل الحديث من خلال ما طرحه الدارمي في مصنفاته العقدية وكيف برر الدارمي هذا الموقف الكلامي ودافع عنه ووضع معاييره ومصادره. ولذا اتسم البحث بأدواته التحليلية التركيبية بعيدا عن الانشغال بتقييم او مناقشة منهجية الدارمي ومواقفه من بعض المقولات الاعتقادية.
