يشتمل هذا الكتاب على ترجمة للأبواب الثاني والثالث والخامس من كتاب بعنوان "تاريخ السودان 1821-1956"، لمؤلفه السوفيتي "سيرجي سمونوف".
وهذه الأبواب سبق أن نشرها المؤلف بعنوان "الحركة المهدية في السودان" في العام 1950 كرسالة لنيل درجة الماجستير في التاريخ، ثم ضمنها كتابه الجديد الشامل لدراسة كل من حركة التحرر الوطني خلال عهد المهدية، وفي عهد الحكم الثنائي حق استقلال السودان في العام 1956.
فلقد زار المؤلف السودان عام 1958، وحظي بمقابلة كبار المؤرخين والسياسيين والمثقفين السودانيين... كما حظي بالإطلاع على ما لم يسبق له الإطلاع عليه من وثائق ومستندات ومنشورات ومدونات وقوانين، مما ساعده على استيفاء أوجه التصور في أبحاثه الأولى.
وحصل سمرنوف على الدكتوراه بسبب هذه الدراسات، ونشرت رسالته عام 1968، وهي حصيلة جهد استغرق ثلاثين عاماً تقريباً لدراسة تاريخ السودان والشعوب الإفريقية.
وقد انتهى المؤلف من دراساته إلى أن حركة المهدية، وإن كانت حركة دينية لدى نشوئها، إلا أنها أضحت بعد انتصارها على حملة هكس، والاستيلاء على الأبيض، وحصار الخرطوم، ثورة تقدمية وطنية في مواجهة الحكم التركي المصري والاستعمار البريطاني وعملائه من كبار الإداريين مثل: بيكر وأمين ولبتون وسلاطين وغردون وغيرهم، إن هذه الحركة الدينية الثورية أدت إلى نشوء دولة المهدية ذات الاستقلال السياسي والإداري والاقتصادي.
واستطاع المؤلف أن يرسم صورة حية مشرقة زاهية لانتصارات المهدية على قوات الحكومة المستعمرين الجانب، من ناحية، كما استطاع الإشارة إلى ميل الخليفة عبد الله التعايشي وكبار رجال قبائل القارة، للسيطرة على زمام الحكم والإدارة والمناصب الكبرى والاستيلاء على أخصب الأراضي واللجوء إلى فرض مزيد من الضرائب وإنشاء أجهزة ضخمة لبيوت المال، وإقصاء أبناء وأقارب المهدي والقضاء على حركات المقاومة المختلفة ومعاملة المعارضين لحكم الخليفة، سواء كانوا من أبناء الشمال، أو أبناء الجنوب، معاملة الأجانب والأعداء.
