تعد قضية المصطلح من القضايا البارزة التي اهتم بها علم اللغة المعاصر، اهتماماً كبيراً في هذا القرن، وذلك لما للمصطلحات من أهمية كبيرة في تيسير العلوم وتوضيح أفكارها، وإيجاد التقارب بين العلماء، وتوفير الجهد على الباحثين، وتقليل مجالات الإختلاف بينهم، ولكما كان المصطلح واضحاً ودقيقاً ومفهوماً كان التقارب بين العلماء أكثر، وقلّت أوجه الإختلاف بينهم.
وعلم اللغة كسائر العلوم يحتاج إلى مصطلح دقيق وواضح ومفهوم، يقرب بين العلماء، وييسر على الباحثين، ويسهل على المتعلمين المعرفة، ويصبح وسيلة ميسرة لفهم قضاياه وكشف أسراره، ولذلك أقبل الباحثون على دراسة مصطلحاته وبيان طبيعتها وخصائصها، وارتباطها بالمعنى الذي تدل عليه، فألفت العديد من الرسائل الجامعية في هذا الموضوع، ونذكر منها: المصطلح النحوي حتى نهاية القرن الثالث الهحري لعوض حمد القوزي، رسالة ماجستير قدمها إلى كلية الآداب بجامعة الرياض عام 1981م. وفي المصطلح النحوي الكوفي لمحمد الجبالي رسالة ماجستير قدمها إلى كلية الآداب بجامعة اليرموك عام 1982.
