مدّ لي يده الرقيقة والمنعمة وقادني إلى صالة الضيوف الضيقة والمعتمة بسبب الأباجورات المعدنية المغلقة، وفي تلك اللحظة بالذات تحولت إلى اللغة الروسية الصافية، وأفصحت له عن كل ما يجول في خاطري عن نيسابور وعمر الخيام ودراساته العلمية وشعره.
احضرت لنا الخادمة الشاي... سألني السيد داشتاني: - كم لديك من الوقت؟... - إذا كان الحديث عن الخيام فلا حدود للوقت... - هل قرأت كتباً عديدة عنه؟... (تقريباً كل ما هو متوفر في أرجاء المعمورة) كانت هذه المبالغة ضرورية في تلك اللحظة، فابتسم وقال: في هذه الحالة لن أتناول موضوع الكتب إطلاقاً، سوف أروي لك كل ما أعرفه على أساس الحكايات الشعبية وأجزاء من مخطوطات قديمة محفوظة حتى الآن إذ ربما تفيدك.
في الحقيقة، كنت مغتبطاً للغاية، فهذا بالذات ما كنت أسعى إليه، وهنا قال السيد داشتاني بهدوء ملحوظ: "أولاً، كان عمر الخيام إنساناً"، وكانت لحظة صمت أخرى، على ما يبدو لم يكن النطق بهذا التأكيد جزافاً فأصغيت له بكل إنتباه.
يتقاطع هذا الكتاب، إلى حد ما، مع رواية رحمه دشتاني، وفي تعبيري عن الشكر لا أود إطلاقاً إلصاق نواقص السرد عندي بشخصه، فهذه النواقص هي نواقصي وأتحمل المسؤولية الكاملة عنها، وكل مطّلع على سيرة حياة هذا الشاعر والعالم الفارسي العظيم إنما يعرف مدى ضآلة المادة الفعلية وفقرها، وأما حياته فيمكن القول إنها رحبة وغنية للغاية، وإن شهراً واحداً في أصفهان أي شهر أيار عام 1092، هذا الشهر الذي نروي عنه هنا إنما، حسبما يبدو لي، يشهد على ما أقوله.
