يقال أن مبتكر الشطرنج وزير من بلاد الهند أراد أن يشقف به الملك الشاب الذي كان متهوراً في خوض الحروب، وفي العصر الإسلامي أقيمت بطولات في الشطرنج تحت رعاية الخلفاء أقيمت بطولات في الشطرنج تحت رعاية الخلفاء فتألقت أسماء الشطرنجيين العرب أمثال العادلي والرازي واللجلاج والمارودي وابن الرومي وأبو بكر محمد الصولي الذي عاش في البصرة في القرن التاسع وله مؤلفات في الشطرنج.
وفي بلاد الغرب أخذ الشطرنج طريقه في النمو والتطور مع تقدم الحضارة الأوروبية ووضعت له اللوائح والقوانين؛ للشطرنج إتحاد دولي تأسس عام 1924 يضم حالياً مائة دولة، ينظم بطولة العالم كل ثلاث سنوات وأولمبياد دولي كل أربع سنوات.
يبحث هذا الكتاب في تاريخ الشطرنج وتراثه وأصله ويعرّف بأهم بأبطاله ويقدم تعاريف لأحجار الشطرنج وحركاته ليكون عوناً للقراء المهتمين بلعبة الشطرنج.
