يعدّ الوقت المورد الحيوي الأول من بين الموارد الأساسية (المالية، والبشرية، والإعلامية، والمادية، والعلمية، والتكنولوجية، والزمانية)، وذلك للأسباب التالية: أولاً: انسيابه بشكل دائم وبدون رجعة ولا تجدد، فعلى الرغم من امتلاك الإنسان للوقت امتلاكاً تاماً، إلى أنه لا يستطيع تخزينه أو وضعه جانباً. ثانياً: إن الوقت هو المورد المحدود الذي لا يمكن أن ينقص أو يزيد. ثالثاً: عدم قابلية الوقت للتمديد، فيكون في آن واحد مورداً ومصدر إكراه. وبالتالي لا بد من توزيعه على الأنشطة العديدة المختلفة خلال اليوم الواحد (ثلث للنوم، وثلث للعمل، وثلث للأغراض الشخصية.
ولأن الوقت أثمن من المال بكثير عني الباحث "مارسيل كوتيه" بوضع هذا الكتاب الذي يعرض فيه لبعض المواقف التي يمكن أن تتخذ، وبعض الطرق التي يمكن أن تسلك، من أجل الحصول على الفائدة الأكبر من الوقت. كما ويقدم فيه عدداً من الوثائق (صيغ، ومشبكات، وأسئلة) تمكن القارئ من الحصول على العديد من المعلومات عن شخصية وكيفية تمضيته للوقت، ونوعية تقديره للوقت، وقدرته على إدارة عمله بطريقة نموذجية تنتج ولا تهدر الوقت الذي يعتبر الاستثمار الأهم.
وبشكل عام قسّم المؤلف كتابه إلى خمس أجزاء وذلك لاعتقاده أن موضوعات هذه الأجزاء هي أهم ما يلزم القارئ لفهم إدارة الوقت وتنظيمه. في الجزء الأول حاول رسم صورة عن الوقت. وبالتشخيص الذاتي لاستخدامه، والغرض من ولوج الباحث لهذا الموضوع هو مساعدة القارئ على اكتشاف كيفية الإحساس بالوقت وتوظيفه. أما الجزء الثاني فخصصه لموضوع كيفية استخدام الزمن وذلك عن طريق تحديده للمهام والأنشطة وترتيبها. وفي الجزء الثالث عرض لقضية تدبير الوقت من زاوية المبادئ أكثر مما يظهر من زاوية الأدوات. وخصص الجزء الرابع للعلاقات القائمة بين التواصل (الشفوي على الخصوص)، وتدبير الوقت. وفي الجزء الخامس استرجع ووسع بعض الأفكار والمبادئ التي تعنى بتدبير الوقت.
