لا نعرف لأبي دلف سوى رحلتين اثنتين، أو رسالتين، الرسالة الأولى والرسالة الثانية، واحدة تروي وقائع رحلة إلى الصين والثانية إلى آسيا الوسطى وأرمينيا، لم يُنشرا أبداً في كتاب واحد يضمّهما كليهما؛ وهذه هي المرة الأولى التي يقوم فيها باحث بتحقيق للعملين في كتاب إستكمالا لجهود سابقة بذلت من قبل الباحثين في حقل الأدب الجغرافي العربي، ويرى محقق هذه الرحلة أن هناك إشارات واضحة في الأولى إلى أن الرحلة قامت حوالي عام 331هـ / 942- 943م، ولا شواهد لدينا على وقت كتابتها، أما الثانية فالشواهد تدلّ على أنها كتبت عام 341هـ / 952م أو بعدها بقليل.
الرسالة الأولى هي الرحلة إلى الصين والهند وقد وردت أخبارها إلى جانب المخطوط الذي جمعها لدى عدد من الجغرافيين العرب ومنهم ياقوت الحموي الذي نشر متنها كاملاً، وقد لاحظ الدارسون أن جَمْعَ الرسالة الأولى مع الرسالة الثانية في مخطوط مشهد يدلّ على أنهما كتبتا معاً في تاريخ واحد.
أما الرسالة الثانية فهي رحلة إلى آسيا الوسطى وأرمينيا، وكان أول من حققها ونشرها المستعربان بطرس بولغاكوف وأنس خالدوف وهما تلميذان للمستعرب الروسي الشهير أغناطيوس كراتشكوفسكي صاحب كتاب "تاريخ الأدب الجغرافي العربي"، وقد ظلت "الرسالة الثانية" مدة طويلة منسيّة ولم تلقَ إهتماماً جدّياً.
الباحث رجع إلى كل ما حقق ونشر وكل ما تداوله الباحثون في دراساتهم ومؤلفاتهم، ورجع إلى المتون الأصلية للرحلتين كما وردت في المخطوطات وفي المظان العربية ليخرج لنا بتحقيق جامع مانع لأثر بالغ الأهمية في المكتبة الجغرافية العربية، وقد بذل لأجل ذلك مضنياً دام سنوات، وقد استحق عن عمله هذا بإمتياز جائزة ابن بطوطة لأدب الرحلة - فرع التحقيق.
