إن أهم الأسباب التي تدفعنا لدراسة الذكاء الإصطناعي هو محاولة فهمنا لعمليات العقل البشري، الذي ميز الله تعالى به الإنسان عن سائر المخلوقات، للتدبر والتأمل في خلقه، والتفكر والتفكير في حل المشكلات، ومهما وصل الذكاء الإصطناعي من محاكاة للعقل البشري يبقى العقل البشري هو الذي فكر ودبر ووضع أساس علم الذكاء الإصطناعي، وذلك بدراسة البشر لآلية عمل أدمغتهم، تلك الأدمغة التي خلقها البارئ عزّ وجلّ بأحسن صورة ووهبه لبني البشر، بإعجازات علمية، تشريحية وسلوكية ونفسية.
فعلم الذكاء الإصطناعي وجد لبناء الذكاء الآلي وهو يعنى بفهم هذا الذكاء ومعرفة الأسس الصحيحة لبنائه والقدرة على التسهيل على الإنسان في مختلف جوانب الحياة التي أصبحت رقمية حاسوبية، أصبح فيها للحاسوب مع الذكاء الإنساني تأثير ضخم وواضح في حياتنا اليومية وفي صناعة الحضارة.
كما أصبح الذكاء الإصطناعي لغزاً مهماً: كيف من الممكن لهذا الدماغ الصغير، سواء كان بيولوجيّاً أو إلكترونياً، أن يفهم ويدرك ويتنبأ ويتفاعل مع عالم أكبر وأعقد من الدماغ نفسه؟ كيف لنا أن نسلك طريق يعنى بصناعة مثل هذا الدماغ الصغير بكل صفاته المعقدة؟...
هذا سؤال صعب، ولكن بخلاف البحث عن وسيلة مواصلات أسرع من سرعة الضوء فإن الباحث في علم الذكاء الإصطناعي والدارس له يجد أن هذا العلم قائم على أسس متينة وممكنة، كل ما عليه هو النظر إلى المرآة ليجد مثالاً حيّاً عن النظام الذكي.
