يندرج هذا الكتاب من ضمن التصانيف الموضوعة فيما يسميه النحّاة: (لحن العامة، أو خطأ العوام) ويمتاز هذا النوع من التأليف بطريقة إنشائية؛ إذ أنه - في الغالب - لخطأ المتكلمين باللهجات العربية الدارجة، وما يوجد في ألفاظها من اللحن بالنسبة للفصحى، وأسلوبه مبنيّ على عبارة :"يقولون (أي العوام): كذا ... والصواب أن يُقال: كذا .
أما عن مؤلف الكتاب "الجمانة في إزالة الرطانة" فكان يلقب "بإبن الإمام" عاش في أواخر القرن التاسع، أو أوائل العاشر للهجرة، ويرجح أن يكون إما عن أبناء تونس ممّن سكن حيناً بلاد (الأندلس وغرناطة) ، أو أنه من مهاجري الأندلس إلى البلاد التونسية. وأما ما يقوله عن مؤلفه "فهذه أوراق ذكرت فيها ما حضرني مما غيّر من كلام العرب؛ مما يكثر في الأشعار والأخبار دوره، ويقبح جهله، وأردفته - ايضاً - بذكر ما أهملوه من الأسماء الفصيحة في المعاني المتداولة والألفاظ العربية، وسميته لذلك بـ : "الجمانة في إزالة الرطانة".
وعليه، توزعت محتويات الكتاب على أبواب منها: باب ما جاء مفتوحاً والعامة تضمه، وباب ما جاء مفتوحاً وهم يكسرونه، وباب ما جاء مكسوراً، وهم يفتحونه، وباب ما جاء مضموماً وهم يكسرونه، وباب ما جاء مكسوراً وهم يضمونه، وباب ما جاء مضموماً وهم يفتحونه (...) وهكذا.
