على إمتداد هذا الكتاب يتساءل دور كايم عن ماهية الظاهرة الإجتماعية ويضع تعريفه الخاص بها، كما يحدّد أبرز السمات التي تعرف بها الوقائع الإجتماعية، والقواعد الخاصة بإدراكها وملاحظتها، والتمييز بين ما هو سليم ومعتلّ منها، وتقديم التفسير العلمي لنشأتها وتطورها، والبرهنة على وجودها، وهو يتضمن أيضاً القواعد الخاصة بتكوين الأنماط الإجتماعية وأنواعها المختلفة.
أضيفت في نهاية الكتاب نبذة عن حياة "دوركايم"، والمؤلفات التي شكلت تتويجاً لعطائه طيلة عقود من الزمان، من أواخر القرن التاسع عشر إلى أوائل القرن المنصرم.
