علم الفراسة هو العلم القديم الحديث, فأول من كتب عنه أرسطو, وبرع فيه العرب, وكتب عنه المسلمون من أمثال الرازي وابن سينا وابن الجوزيه ثم أخذه الأوربيون عن المسلمين في الوقت الذي كانت فيه الحضارة الإسلامية منارة للعالم أجمع والغرب يعيش في عصور الظلام الدامس.
وبعد ذلك طوروا هذا العلم وأصبح علماً قائماً بذاته.
كما أن الفراسة قد تناولها القرآن الكريم في عدة آيات ومنها قوله تعالي: "سيماهم في وجوههم من أثر السجود" سورة الفتح الآية 29.
ولقد عرف من أنواع الفراسة قديماً: فراسة الأثر, وفراسة اليشر, وفراسة اللغة, وفراسة الحس (اللون - الذوق - اللمس), وفراسة السلوك والمزاج والأصوات والأحوال النفسية وغير ذلك.
ومن أنواع الفراسة حديثاً: فراسة الوجوه, وفراسة الإيماءات والحركات, وفراسة خط اليد, وفراسة الألوان... إلخ.
وعبر التاريخ أشتهرت أسر ببراعتها في الفراسة وتقصي الأثر, وذكرت الكتب العربية والأجنبية العديد من القصص والحكايات التي تتعلق بفراسة بعض الرجال والنساء في مختلف العصور.
