كاتب و روائي سوري، من مواليد دمشق، حاصل على دكتوراه في الأدب العربي الحديث، وإجازة في الأدبين العربي والفرنسي، عمل في التدريس، وفي مجمع اللغة العربية، وفي مركز جمعة الماجد للثقافة والتراث في دبي، يعمل حالياً في دار الفكر ومعهد الفتح الإسلامي بدمشق، له أكثر من أربعين كتاباً في الأدب والتاريخ والتراث والترجمة.

أحد أجزاء سلسلة علماء دمشق وأعيانها خلال خمسة قرون، وقد توفر هذا الجزء على المتوفين من علمائها وأعيانها في الربع الأول من القرن الخامس عشر الهجري. أورد مؤلف الكتاب أكثر من ثلاث مئة وعشرين ترجمة لعلماء هذه المدينة وأعلامها، تنوعت توجهاتهم ما بين علماء شريعة وفقهاء قانون، وما بين حكام وسياسيين وإداريين وشعراء وكتاب وفنانين ومتصوفة ومؤلفين وسوى ذلك، من أبناء دمشق، أو الناشئين بها، أو السالكين بها زمناً، أو اللاجئين إليها، أو المتوفين بها. رتب المؤلف تراجم كتابه على السنوات، فأوردها بحسب الأقدم وفاة بادئاً بسنة 1401هـ، الموافقة لسنة 1979م حتى نهاية عام 1425هـ، الموافق لعام 2004م. ذكر اسم المترجم المعروف به، ثم سنتي ولادته ووفاته بالتاريخين الهجري والميلادي، ثم ذكر اسمه كاملاً، ثم أورد نبذة عنه وخاصة مكان ولادته ونشأته ودراسته وعلومه التي حصَّلها ومن أخذ عنهم من العلماء، ثم ذكر وظائفه وأعماله الأساسية وشيئاً من أخلاقه إن أمكن، وما قيل فيه. ثم ختم بذكر المصادر والمراجع. وأورد في آخر الكتاب كشافاً بأسماء الأعلام مرتباً على الحروف الهجائية لتسهيل الرجوع إلى من يراد الوقوف على ترجمته، كما أورد بعض وثائق تتعلق بأصحاب المعاجم. تأتي أهمية الكتاب من كون كثير من التراجم فيه اعتمد على مصادر شفوية، جمعها المؤلف بجهده خلال سنوات عديدة باتصاله مع الأشخاص المطلعين.
