في الكتاب الذي بين أيدينا الآن عرض لنتائج دراسة ميدانية طبقناها مؤخرًا في القاهرة على عينة من مشاهدي البرامج الوافدة عبر الهوائيات القصعية (البارابولية) لمعرفة الأسباب التي تختفي وراء حيازة هذا الهوائي والتعرض الانتقائي من خلاله لبرامج دول أخرى- والتي تتلخص في السؤال: لماذا؟ ومدى تأثير الإقبال على مشاهدة هذه البرامج الوافدة على متابعة برامج التليفزيون المصري.
والإجابة عن السؤال الرئيسي المطروح للبحث (لماذا؟) يتطلب التركيز على عنصر أساسي في العملية الاتصالية، وهو المتلقي، الذي يتعرض انتقائيًا لهذا المضمون الوافد عبر الأقمار الصناعية مع حيازته الهوائي القصعي.
وبهذا، فإن ما يقدمه هذا الكتاب يعد مساهمة في تقييم دور وسائل الإعلام المصرية، ويضع تصورًا للمطلوب منها في ظل نظام دولي جديد بدأت تتكشف نواياه، ومع التأكيد هنا على ما ذكره "هيربرت تشيرال" في كتابه "مجتمع الأسلاك: تحديات المستقبل" بأنه "مع الأقمار الصناعية تلاشت المسافات وانتهت الحدود والجمارك، وأن المجتمعات- وبوجه خاص في الدول النامية- تتجه إلى الدخول في قالب ثقافي واحد يتم إعداده غالبًا في الولايات المتحدة، وذلك بحكم سيطرتها على التكنولوجيا الحديثة التي مكنتها من الاتصال بالشعوب مباشرة بدلًا من التعامل مع حكوماتها"، وهو ما أشار إليه الدكتور اليماني بما عناه بأن "السيادة لمن يملك التكنولوجيا".
