ابن الرومي شاعر ذو طابع خاص في الأدب العربي، ربما لا يماثله فيه غيره، وكان ذلك سببًا في تطور مجرى حياته على النحو الذي تطور عليه، وسببًا في عناية المحدثين به، والمشتغلين من الأدباء بنظريات علم النفس خاصة، وأدى ذلك كله إلى أن ألف الأستاذ عباس محمود العقاد كتابه المعروف عن ابن الرومي، فجمع فيه زبدة ما يمكن أن يقال عن هذا الشاعر، إذن فما الذي دفع هذا المستشرق إلى أن يخرج كتابه عام 1944 بعد أن طبع كتاب العقاد بزمن طويل؟ وهل هو أهل للترجمة؟، مؤلف الكتاب "روفون جست" مستشرق كبير، يبحث في الثقافة العربية منذ زمن بعيد، ويهدف من كتابه هذا إلى تيسير قراءة شعر ابن الرومي وإبانة تطور علاقاته بمن اتصل بهم في حياته، وترتيب هذه العلاقات زمنيًا، معتمدًا في ذلك كله على شعره.
