يعد العصر المغولي واحداً من أكثر العصور التأريخية التي مرت بها البشرية فزعاً ورعباً، وغطت حضارات متعددة وكان أكثرها إيلاماً ما وقع من تدمير على بلاد الصين وبلاد ما وراء النهر وإيران والعراق وآسيا الصغرى وشرق أوروبا وغدت هذه البلدان تشكل الجزء الأكبر من مساحة الإمبراطورية التي كونها جنكيزخان واتخذ من قراقورم في منغوليا عاصمة لها.
وموضوع هذه الإمبراطورية يعد من الموضوعات المهمة في تأريخنا الإسلامي ومما هو مؤسف أن المكتبة العربية المعاصرة قليلة الدراسات والمصادر ذات القيمة حولها، فموضوعات هذه الإمبراطورية ليست أدنى مكانة من موضوعات الحروب الصليبية، وقد ارتبط جزء من تأريخنا العربي والإسلامي بهذه الإمبراطورية فهو يرتبط إرتباطاً وثيقاً بالإحتلال المغولي لبلاد الإسلام، وإسقاط الخلافة العباسية وإحتلال بغداد ثم محاولة إحتلال بلاد الشام ومصر وهزيمة المغول في عين جالوت وقيام الدولة الإيلخانية في إيران والعراق وتحول مغول هذه الدولة وبلاد القفجاق من الوثنية إلى الإسلام.
هذا الإرتباط جعل من الأهمية فهم ماهية هذه الإمبراطورية وهذا استوجب طرح أسئلة لفهمها منها من هم المغول؟ وما أصلهم؟ وقبائلهم وكيف وحدهم جنكيزخان وأقام إمبراطوريته؟ وكيف قسم إمبراطوريته بين أبنائه وما تمخض عن ذلك من صراعات سياسية بين الأبناء ومن بعدهم الأحفاد على منصب الخانية التي قلما خلا عهد من عهودها من مشاكل حول من يخلف الخان المتوفى.
