في هذا الكتاب استعراض مختصر لمسيرة العلم الحديث، وما وصل إليه في علم الطبيعة (الفيزياء) حتى ظهور نظرية الكم في نهاية الربع الأول من القرن العشرين. وما ترتب على هذه النظرية من تغيير لنظرة الإنسان إلى الكون والحياة، لذلك يتطرق الكتاب لطبيعة المعرفة العلمية ومناهجها المختلفة، وتطورها ومسيرتها عبر التاريخ.
ويتألف هذا الكتاب من قسمين، يدور القسم الأول حول طبيعة العلم والمعرفة، ويضم ثلاثة فصول: حدود العلم، ومنهج العلم، ومسيرة العلم. ويدور القسم الثاني حول اكتشاف الذرة والإلكترون وعلاقة ذلك بالضوء، ويضم أربعة فصول أيضاً هي: الملعب السحري، ولغزو الضوء، والكارنة فوق البنفسجية، ونظرية الكم.
يقول إرنست رذرفورد, بأن العلم الحقيقي هو الفيزياء وما عداه جمع طوابع. والفيزياء أم العلوم الطبيعية, وأكثرها إثارة, وأوفرها نفعاً للبشرية. ماذا يكون حال العالم اليوم لو لم توجد فيه الكهرباء والميكروسكوب, والراديو, والتلفزيون, وأشعة X, والمركبات الفضائية والليزر, ومحركات الديزل, والبطارية, والترانزستور, والكومبيوتر والطاقة الذرية, وأشياء كثيرة أخرى. لم تقتصر الفيزياء على هذه الإنجازات والإختراعات فحسب, بل وصلت الى ما يمس جوهر تفكير الإنسان وتصوراته عن الكون والوجود. لذلك بدأ العاملون في التخصصات الأخرى مثل الإدارة, والاقتصاد, والأحياء, والكومبيوتر, والعلوم الاجتماعية, وغيرها من حقول المعرفة, بدأوا النظر في نظريات الطبيعة, مثل نظرية الكم, ونظرية الفوضى, ليستخلصوا منها أفكاراً جديدة ورؤى جديدة تساعدهم في مجال اختصاصهم. إن أي مثقف يحتاج الى الإلمام بالنظريات العلمية الأساسية, وكيفية التوصل إليها, لأن هذه النظريات والحقائق العلمية تكشف لنا أسرار الطبيعة, وتعرفنا بقوانين الكون الذي نعيش فيه, حتى يكون تفكيرنا, ومنهجنا منسجماً مع حقائق الكون والوجود, متفاعلاً مع سنن الحياة, ومعبراً عنها.
