يتناول الكتاب كيف كانت الإسكندرية منذ فتح الإسكندر الأكبر منارة العلوم والآداب والفنون، ثم يعرض لعصر كاليماخوس القوريني، ثم الرموز السياسية فى ذلك العصر، ثم الرموز الدينية، ثم يعرض للإبجراما والمدارس الأدبية المختلفة، وفي الباب الأخير يعرض للمسيحية وأصلها.
