من العنوان " نغبة الظمآن من فوائد أبي حيان " يدرك القارىء أن مؤلفها الإمام النحوي أثير الدين الدياني الأندلسي قصد بها وصل مروياته بمرويات الإمام أبي حيان . وفعلاً كانت النغبة نغبة الواردين عليه والمتقين منه العلم ، وهي أشبه ما تكون بكتب الفوائد الحديثية والتي اعتاد أصحابها أن يختموها بأشعار وأدبيات . فكان مؤلفها وضعها لمن يقصده من طلبة العلم القراءة عليه والأخذ عنه ، فيقرأ عليه هذا الجزء ليبل عطشه من مرويات الإمام الحديثية والأدبية ، ويتصل به شيء من شعره وأدبياته بالإسناد .
لذلك اهتم الأئمة بهذه النغبة في القراءات لما فيها من فوائد وفرائد ، حتى أن كتب التاريخ والطبقات والأثبات والمعاجم والمشيخات التي خرجت من طريق النغبة رفعت إسنادها لمؤلفها الحياني .
هذا وقد ذيّل الكتاب بترجمة مختصرة فيها نص على بعض مسموعات الإمام الحديثية ، ثم على منزلته في العلوم ، وعلى بعض مؤلفاته ، ثم على وفاته ومولده ، ثم على ثلاثة من الرواة عنه .
