شهد العقد الاخير من القرن العشرين اهتماما متزايدا بقضية الفقر وطرق معالجته وذلك نسبة لانتشاره وزيادة حدته بسبب عدة عوامل مها العومل الاقتصادية السايسية الاجتماعية والبيئية مما نتج عنه تباطؤ في النمو وزيادة الديون الخارجية خاصة في الدول النامية كما أشارت عدن دراسات في الدول النامية بصورة عامة وفي دول أفريقيا جنوب الصحراء إلى انتشار ظاهرة الفقر في العالم اليوم ونجد ان تقرير التنمية البشرية للعام 2001 ، قد أشار إلى تحديات التنمية البشرية ما زالت كبيرة مع مطلع الالفية الثالثة حيث تفصح النظرة إلى أحوال العالم على ان هناك الكثير من الناس يعيشون بمستويات حرمان غير مقبولة.وفي هذا الكتاب نتعرض لتلك المشكلة في ولاية شمال كردفان ويدرس أبعادها وآثارها من خلال الدراسة الميدانية التى أجريت في محلية "سودري" بين مجموعات من الرعاة الرحل.
