هذا الكتاب "تاريخ الآلات الموسيقية الشعبية المصرية" جزء من سلسلة "تاريخ المصريين" هدفه تعريف القارىء على تاريخ الآلات الموسيقية الشعبية المصرية وتقديمها بصورة، تعتمد على الرسومات التوضيحية والشروحات النظرية المتكاملة التي توضح مادة الكتاب. وبشكل عام يبدأ الكتاب بحديث موسع يتناول آلات الطرق، والآلات ذاتية التصويت، والطبول والدفوف، وآلات النفخ، وآلات الوترية، وبعد ذلك ينتقل إلى آلات الطرق الشعبية المصرية، فيتحدث عن الأكواب، والجلاجل، والزنانة، والصلاصل، والصاجات، والصورة، والقضيب، والكاسات، والمثلث، والمصفقات، والملاعق، والمنجور، والناقوس.
كما يتحدث عن آلات ذات الرقين، فيتناول أولاً الطبول، ثم الدفوف، وينتقل إلى آلات الفخ الشعبية المصرية فيتحدث (أولاً) عن الصفارات والنايات، وينتقل (ثانياً) غلى الآلات ذات الريشة المفردة، (وثالثاً) إلى المزامير ذات الريشة المزدوجة، (رابعاً) غلى القرب، وخامساً غلى الأبواق مثل البروجي، والقرن، والنفير، والبلبل، والأكورديون.
كذلك يتناول الكتاب الآلات الوترية، فيتحدث (أولاً) عن آلات النبر، وهي السمعية والطنبورة، والعود، والقانون، وثانياً عن آلات القوس، وهي الجوزة، والربابة، ويتناول نوعين: الكمانجة العجوز، وربابة الشاعر، والسيجري، وهي الربابة في النوبة المصرية، والكمنجة أو الفيولينة. الكتاب كما هو واضح، يعد موسوعة للآلات الموسيقية من أستاذ متخصص هو الدكتور فتحي الضناوي أستاذ علوم الموسيقى بجامعة حلوان.
